With registered capital of 34.9 billion RMB, the Company is mainly engaged in the following businesses: development, investment, construction, operation and management of power sources; production and sale of power and heat; development, investment, construction, production, and sale of businesses and products related to finance, coal, transportation, renewable energy, and environmental protection; industrial investment, operation and management.

For many years, the Company has been steadfastly implementing national strategic deployments, earnestly performing the economic, political, and social responsibilities as a central SOE, and adhering to the 'Three-color' corporate mission. The company has gradually formed the strategic positioning of "accelerating the building of a world-class modernized clean energy enterprise featuring 'Three Colors, Three Strongs, and Three Excellents', with power as the core business, synergy among various energy sources, innovation as the guiding force, finance as the supporting business, and a global layout", thus making contributions to guaranteeing the nation's energy security, promoting energy transition and upgrading, and improving the development of national economy.

The company owns 51 secondary units, more than 460 tertiary enterprises, and 5 listed enterprises (namely, Huaneng Power International Inc., Inner Mongolia Mengdian Huaneng Thermal Power Corp. Ltd., Shandong Xinneng Taishan Power Generation Co., Ltd., Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower Inc., and China Great Wall Securities Co., Ltd.), with 130,000 employees. At the end of 2020, the total installed capacity of wholly-owned and majority-owned power plants was 197.33GW, and the production capacity of coal was 85 million tons per year. The company's total asset was close to 1.2 trillion RMB, with major operating indexes keeping a leading position in the industry. The Company was the first among Chinese power generation enterprises to join the ranks of Fortune Global 500, and was ranked No. 248th in 2021, up 18 places as compared to the previous year. SASAC has awarded the Company A-level performance assessment results for 15 times, and A-level term assessment results for the person-in-charge of central SOE for 5 times, being the top among comparable enterprises in China.
